Brugger was at the meeting representing a school of thought that most people would consider the direct enemy of transhumanism: the American religious right. He is well aware that ideas about religion and human augmentation seem almost diametrically opposed, but he recounts the paraplegic man's story to illustrate how the ongoing — and often fiery — debate on the ethics of transhumanism could potentially end in understanding, if only we kept our minds open.
