Right now, DARPA is developing robots capable of rescuing humans from burning buildings even if that means knocking down walls and wading through flames. These potential savior-bots are evaluated on an obstacle course designed to test their speed, stability, versatility, and more. They're getting better, stronger, and faster. But what will panicked people think when a machine crashes into their smoke-filled living room? Will these robots alleviate or compound the terror? Understanding the correlation between effectiveness and trust is profoundly difficult when it comes to robot-human interaction.
